Area and Perimeter
Ages 8–11 · 13 lessons · Math
Learn how to measure shapes using area and perimeter!
This course gives students a gentle introduction to the concepts of area and perimeter, focusing on rectangles.
This course starts by introducing the unit square as a way to measure how big a shape is. It covers several methods for finding area, including counting unit squares, using skip counting, and multiplying length times width. Students will also practice comparing areas of rectangles, as well as finding areas of shapes that can be divided into rectangles.
The second half of the course introduces the idea of perimeter as the distance around the outside of a shape. It covers multiple methods for finding the perimeter of a rectangle, including adding the side lengths and using the perimeter formula.
Students will then get practice differentiating area and perimeter, and looking at shapes with equal areas and different perimeters, or equal perimeters and different areas.
