The recipe for long division

This lesson introduces the structure of long division for the first time and teaches the bracket notation. Students are walked step by step through a single easy example, 84 ÷ 4, using the four-step Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down cycle. From there, students move into guided practice applying the steps start to finish on similar two-digit-by-one-digit problems with clean, even quotients (no remainders).
