Multiplying With Area Models

Learn how to multiply 1-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers using an area model.

Students are introduced to the concept of an area model for multiplying 1-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers up to 19; for example, 7 × 13. Students will use the area model approach to help break down the 2-digit number into its tens and ones pieces, and then add the products of each section together to find the total area.
Along the way students plan garden beds, play math detective to catch a mistake in someone else's area model, and earn badges.
